How To Fix Your Disposal

Fixing a garbage disposal can be a straightforward DIY task for common issues. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you fix a malfunctioning garbage disposal:

Safety Note: Before starting any repair, ensure the disposal is disconnected from power. This typically involves turning off the circuit breaker or unplugging it from the outlet.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  1. Hex wrench or Allen wrench (usually provided with the disposal)
  2. Pliers
  3. Bucket or pan
  4. Flashlight (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Disconnect Power:

  • Ensure the disposal is not connected to electrical power by turning off the circuit breaker or unplugging it.

2. Check for Blockages:

  • Shine a flashlight into the disposal to check for any visible blockages or foreign objects. Use pliers or tongs to remove any debris, but be very cautious and avoid putting your hands inside.

3. Reset the Disposal:

  • Some disposals have a reset button. Locate it on the bottom of the disposal unit and press it to reset the motor. If the disposal was tripped due to overheating, this can often resolve the issue.

4. Use the Wrench:

  • If the disposal is jammed and the motor won't turn, you can use a hex wrench (Allen wrench) that fits into the hexagonal hole on the bottom of the disposal. Insert the wrench and manually rotate it clockwise and counterclockwise to free the jam.

5. Check the Circuit:

  • If the disposal still doesn't work, check the electrical circuit. Ensure the disposal is properly plugged in or that the circuit breaker hasn't tripped.

6. Test with Power:

  • After checking all these steps, reconnect the power and turn on the disposal to see if it's functioning. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations.

7. Address Unusual Noises:

  • If you hear unusual noises like grinding or rattling, it could indicate a foreign object is still stuck. Turn off the disposal and use pliers or tongs to remove the obstruction.

8. Leaks or Seals:

  • If you notice leaks around the disposal or suspect a worn-out seal, it may require replacement. This typically involves disconnecting the disposal, removing it from the mounting bracket, and installing a new one.

9. Seek Professional Help:

  • If these steps do not resolve the issue or if you are uncomfortable performing the repair, it's advisable to contact a professional plumber or electrician to diagnose and fix the problem.

Remember to exercise caution when working with a garbage disposal, and always ensure it is disconnected from electrical power before attempting any repairs. If in doubt, consult a professional to avoid any accidents or damage to your plumbing system.
